Listening and engaged: Teachers tout technology in the classroom

Listening and engaged: Teachers tout technology in the classroom

While the article is based on elementary classrooms, it’s still a pretty good article; particularly with regard to the clickers and being able to recognize the students who don’t understand the concept.  Remember sitting in the classroom as a kid and when you didn’t know the answer, you simply didn’t raise your hand?  Or you prayed that you didn’t get called on randomly?  The clicker system will help a teacher to know what percentage of students don’t understand and can opt to spend more time on that concept.  And since the results can be submitted anonymously, then students are called out for not knowing the correct answer; yet everyone benefits from a review of the lesson.

Unfortunately, I think this practice still happens in college.

Benefits of Teaching Online

Benefits of Teaching Online

Working in support in distance education has taught me a lot.  One is that this particular article is not a hard sell…most faculty LOVE teaching online.  In fact, they love it so much that they post their stuff during the first week and only check back in at mid-term and finals.  While teaching online is not for everyone; it is also true that not everyone is cut out for teaching online.  I’ve seen a lot of instructors who shouldn’t be teaching online, despite the benefits of doing so.  So, while I’m posting this article, I tend to take it with a grain of salt.

I call this post “what the hell?”

I came upon this link today:

http://www.wetakeyourclass.com/

and I absolutely could not believe it.  (Well, I guess I *can* believe it, but I don’t want to).

There is a company that is promoting CHEATING.  Well, they classify themselves as “tutoring.” Ha!

Quotes from their website:

“We take your online college courses for you and get you an A.”  Seriously?

“Life Is Too Short to Spend on Classes You Have No Interest In”  WTF?

As an online instructor, it’s hard enough to monitor for cheating students, but now there are businesses taking advantage of the opportunity for online cheating.  This makes my blood boil.

I don’t “cheat” when I spend time developing my course.  I pour my heart and soul into each module and project to make sure that students get the most out of the topic and maybe have some fun doing it.  I use creativity to engage my students.  And all of MY hard work is being undermined by companies like this that think they are SO clever and can outsmart the institutions of higher education.

Enjoy it while it lasts Paul Wakefield because your “success” as a company will be short-lived.

I leave you with a piece of irony.
